How Early Should You Book a Tanzania Safari for 2027 or 2028?

October 10, 2026

For a Great Migration trip between July and October, book 12 to 18 months ahead. For the festive season, book at least 12 months ahead. For June or February calving season, aim for 9 to 12 months. For the rainy months, 3 to 6 months is often enough.

That is the short answer to how early to book a Tanzania safari. The more useful answer is this: your trip is only as available as its scarcest piece. A safari is not one booking. It is a chain of camps, vehicles, guides and small aircraft seats, all lined up on exact nights. You book at the pace of the hardest link in that chain, not the pace of your travel date.

This guide shows you how to find that hard link, and what it means if you want to book a Tanzania safari for 2027 or 2028.

How early to book a Tanzania safari, season by season

Start with the season. It sets the baseline. Everything else in this article can push your booking date earlier, but rarely later.

When you travel What draws people Book this far ahead
July to October Dry season, Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti 12 to 18 months
Mid December to early January Festive holidays, green plains, herds moving south 12 months or more
January to March Calving season around Ndutu in the southern Serengeti 9 to 12 months
June Start of the dry season, herds often in the Western Corridor, high season rates at many camps 9 to 12 months
November to mid December Short rains, herds moving south, lower rates 4 to 6 months
April and May Long rains, lowest rates, fewest vehicles 3 to 6 months

Treat these as starting points. Seasons in Tanzania follow the rain, not the calendar, and the herds follow the grass. Our Tanzania travel FAQs explain how the dry and rainy seasons usually fall.

Find the bottleneck in your trip

Two travellers can pick the same week and need very different booking dates. The difference is almost always one of four things.

1. A specific camp in a specific place

If your trip depends on one area, that area sets your deadline. The clearest case is the northern Serengeti from July to October. The camps closest to the Mara River crossing points are small, often fewer than 20 tents, and they fill first.

Calving season works the same way. Seasonal camps around Ndutu generally operate only from about December to March. That short window means a small number of beds for a very popular few months.

Booking early also matters inside a camp. The first guests to book get the pick of the rooms, which often means the tents with the best views or the most privacy. Book late and you may get the camp you wanted, but not the room.

If you are flexible about the exact camp, you have more room. Larger lodges in the central Serengeti, around the Ngorongoro Crater rim and in Tarangire have more rooms and usually more late space.

2. How many of you are travelling

A couple needs one tent per camp. A family of five or a group of friends might need three tents in the same camp on the same nights, across four or five camps in a row. Each extra room shrinks the list of camps that can say yes.

In practice, groups of four or more should add three to six months to the season baseline. If your group is travelling in July or August, when school holidays in Europe and North America overlap with crossing season, add more.

3. The type of room you need

Most safari camps are built around double and twin tents. Anything else is scarce:

  • Family tents or connecting units. Many camps have only one or two.
  • Single rooms. Few camps have true singles, so solo travellers often pay a supplement for a double, and even those go early.
  • Triples. Three friends sharing can be harder to place than two couples.
  • Honeymoon or private suites. Often just one per camp.

Families should also check age rules. Some camps do not accept younger children, or only accept them in family tents or with a private vehicle. That cuts the list again, so families with young children are wise to treat the 12 to 18 month window as the norm, not the exception.

4. Whether your trip depends on small planes

A drive-in safari from Arusha mostly depends on beds. A fly-in safari also depends on seats on light aircraft between airstrips, on set days.

These planes are small. Coastal Aviation, a main operator on Serengeti routes, allows 15 kg per person including hand luggage, with soft bags strongly recommended. Its larger-allowance seats, which carry 30 kg, depend on availability. The airline also notes that groups may sometimes be split across different aircraft.

If you need extra luggage space for camera gear, or you want your whole group on the same plane, book the flights early, at the same time as the camps. A camp with space is not much use if you cannot reach it on that day.

International flights matter too. If you plan to use air miles, or you need specific dates into Kilimanjaro International Airport, check long-haul options before you lock the safari. It is easier to move a safari by a day than to rebook a long-haul fare.

Booking a Tanzania safari for 2027 from today

If you are reading this in late 2026, here is where you stand.

February 2027 calving. You are only a few months out. It is still possible, but expect to compromise on the exact camp or dates, or to split your Ndutu nights across two camps. Decide quickly.

July to October 2027. You are nine to twelve months out, which is later than our baseline but not too late. Many of the smaller northern Serengeti camps will already be filling for August and September. If crossings are your main goal, this is the time to commit, not to keep comparing.

Christmas and New Year 2027. You are just over a year out. Good choice remains, but families and groups should move now.

April and May 2027. No rush. Note that Easter 2027 falls on 28 March, so families using spring school holidays will be travelling as the long rains begin.

Booking a Tanzania safari for 2028

Booking for 2028 now gives you first pick. This is the right time for:

  • Families who need family tents in July or August 2028
  • Groups of six or more
  • Anyone set on one particular camp near the Mara River
  • Honeymooners who want a private suite on fixed wedding dates

Be aware that some camps may not have released their 2028 rates yet. That is normal this far ahead, and it should not stop you. Roy Safaris can hold 2028 space on provisional rates. If a camp’s final price changes when it is released, we will tell you before anything is confirmed.

Easter 2028 falls on 16 April, in the middle of the long rains. Families tied to that holiday should expect a green, quiet, lower-priced safari, and should check which camps will be open.

When booking late really does work

Booking early is not always necessary. A late booking can work well if most of these apply to you:

  • You are travelling in April, May or November.
  • You are one couple or a solo traveller happy with a standard room.
  • You are flexible on dates by a few days either way.
  • You are driving rather than flying between parks.
  • You care more about good wildlife than one specific event.

The long rains are the clearest example. Some seasonal and remote camps close for part of April and May, which narrows your choice. But the camps that stay open often have space and lower rates. Expect heavy showers, often in the afternoon, the odd all-day soak and some muddy side tracks. Resident wildlife does not leave, and you will share sightings with far fewer vehicles.

What you give up by booking late is choice, not the safari itself. You may get a good camp rather than the camp you had in mind, or a fair location rather than the best one.

What booking early does not buy you

An early booking secures your beds, seats and guide. It does not secure the wildlife.

The Great Migration in the Serengeti moves with the rain. A dry spell or a late downpour can shift the herds by weeks. River crossings are never on a schedule. Some groups see one on their first morning. Others wait several days.

The better approach is to book early and build in slack. For crossings, plan at least three or four nights in the north, not one or two. For calving, choose a base where your guide can cover both the Ndutu woodlands and the wider short grass plains, since the herds can shift between them. That gives you a margin if the herds are not where the averages say.

Early booking also does not always mean a lower price. Some camps offer early rates, but many simply hold the published rate. The real gain is choice. Before paying a deposit, ask about the deposit amount, when the balance is due and the cancellation terms. These differ between camps and operators, and they matter more the earlier you book.

Adding Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro to the plan

A beach stay or a climb adds new links to the chain. Popular Zanzibar beach stays fill in the same peak windows as the safari camps, especially over Christmas and in July and August. Book the beach at the same time as the safari, not as an afterthought.

If you are climbing Kilimanjaro before or after your safari, fix the climb dates first. The length of the climb depends on your route and how many days you need to adjust to the altitude, so it is the least flexible part of the trip. Leave at least one rest night between the mountain and your first game drive.

The practical verdict

Work out your booking date backwards. Start with the season baseline. Then ask four questions. Does my trip depend on one specific place? Are we more than two people? Do we need anything other than a standard double? Are we flying between parks? Each “yes” moves your date earlier.

For most travellers looking at July to October 2027, the time to book is now. For families, groups and anyone set on a particular camp in 2028, early 2027 is a strong time to secure space. For flexible couples travelling in the green season, there is no need to rush.
