Ol Doinyo Lengai

Ol Doinyo Lengai is one of Tanzania’s most extraordinary natural landmarks and the only active volcano in the world known to produce white, carbonatite lava. Rising above the arid landscapes of the Lake Natron region in northern Tanzania, the mountain holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the local Maasai people, who call it Oldoinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God.”

Unlike other volcanic peaks, Ol Doinyo Lengai offers a stark, almost lunar landscape shaped by its rare lava flows and steep slopes. The climb is demanding and typically undertaken overnight, allowing trekkers to reach the summit by sunrise. From the top, sweeping views stretch across the Great Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and the surrounding volcanic plains, creating one of the most dramatic vantage points in East Africa.

A visit to Ol Doinyo Lengai is often combined with time at Lake Natron, where flamingos gather to breed, and nearby hot springs and waterfalls provide contrast to the harsh terrain. Located around four to five hours’ drive from Arusha, Ol Doinyo Lengai appeals to adventurous travelers seeking a challenging climb, unique geology, and a deeper connection to Tanzania’s cultural landscape.
