Lake Eyasi
Experience, See, and Enjoy
Lake Eyasi lies in a remote, semi-arid basin south of the Ngorongoro Highlands and offers one of Tanzania’s most authentic cultural experiences. Rather than classic game drives, a visit to Lake Eyasi focuses on people, traditions, and landscapes that have changed very little over generations.
The area is best known as home to the Hadzabe, one of Africa’s last remaining hunter-gatherer communities. Visitors can spend time with the Hadzabe, learning about their way of life, click-based language, and traditional hunting practices. Nearby, the Datoga community offers insight into ancient blacksmithing techniques and pastoral traditions that remain central to daily life.
Beyond cultural encounters, Lake Eyasi’s surroundings are strikingly beautiful. Walking safaris around the lake reveal open bushland, baobab-dotted hills, and volcanic outcrops, while seasonal birdlife gathers along the salt flats. Most visitors spend two nights in the area to fully experience its rhythm, though shorter visits from Karatu are also possible for those with limited time.
