Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s largest national park and one of its most rewarding safari destinations for travelers seeking space, solitude, and exceptional wildlife encounters. Located in southern Tanzania, Ruaha forms the heart of the country’s southern safari circuit and offers a markedly different experience from the busier northern parks.

The park’s defining feature is the Great Ruaha River, which acts as a lifeline during the dry season. As water sources elsewhere diminish, large concentrations of wildlife gather along the riverbanks, making game viewing particularly impressive from June to October. Elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards, and large prides of predators are frequently seen, alongside an exceptional diversity of antelope species.

Ruaha’s landscape is vast and dramatic, shaped by rolling hills, open savannah, rocky escarpments, ancient baobab trees, and miombo woodland. This varied terrain supports rich birdlife and contributes to the park’s wild, untamed character. With low visitor numbers and expansive wilderness, Ruaha National Park is ideal for travelers looking for an authentic safari experience, often combined with Nyerere National Park for a deeper exploration of southern Tanzania.
