Kilimanjaro National Park

Kilimanjaro National Park is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak at 5,895 metres. Rising dramatically above the plains of northern Tanzania, the mountain is a dormant volcano made up of three volcanic cones: Shira, Mawenzi, and Kibo, with the summit located on Kibo’s Uhuru Peak.

Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most accessible high-altitude climbs and can be trekked via several established routes, including Marangu, Machame, Rongai, Lemosho, Shira, and Umbwe. Each route offers a different balance of scenery, difficulty, and acclimatization. Marangu is the only route with shared mountain huts, while all other routes involve camping. Most climbs take between six and eight days, depending on the route and acclimatization profile.

While Kilimanjaro does not require technical climbing skills, proper preparation is essential. Route choice, acclimatization, fitness level, and safety planning all play a major role in a successful summit. The park is easily reached by road from Arusha, making it a natural starting point for both trekking-focused journeys and broader northern Tanzania itineraries.
