In practice, a two-night rim stay can mean paying the conservation fee two or three times. Based in Karatu, you usually pay it once, on your crater day. Mist, cold and the view you actually get
The rim often sits in cloud early in the day. Expect some mornings when the crater is a white bowl until the sun burns through, so book a rim room for the setting, not for a guaranteed clear view. How the crater day works
The crater gates open at 06:00 and close at 18:00. Vehicles go down by the one-way Seneto road on the western side and climb out by a separate road. Time on the floor is usually limited to about six hours, and you must visit with a licensed guide.
- The evening before: agree the departure time and a packed breakfast with your guide.
- Departure: from the rim, leave soon after 06:00. From Karatu, leave about 30 to 45 minutes earlier to clear Lodoare Gate.
- On the floor: look for lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena, hippo, zebra and wildebeest, and for flamingos on Lake Magadi. Elephants often shelter in the Lerai Forest.
