The Hotel Looks Perfect. Is It on the Wrong Zanzibar Coast?

The photographs show white sand, turquoise water and a beautiful room overlooking the ocean. It seems impossible to choose badly.

Then you arrive and discover that the sea disappears for hours every day. The restaurants you wanted are an expensive drive away. Or the peaceful beach you imagined has music playing late into the night.

The hotel may be exactly as advertised. The problem is that you chose the wrong Zanzibar coast for the holiday you wanted.

The same island can deliver completely different holidays

Zanzibar is not one continuous resort strip. Each coast has its own tides, atmosphere, swimming conditions and level of development.

A couple seeking privacy may dislike the busiest part of Nungwi. A family that wants to swim throughout the day may struggle with the dramatic tides of the east coast. A kitesurfer could feel bored at a quiet northern resort.

Choosing the coast first is often more important than choosing the hotel.

Choose Nungwi if you want energy and convenience

Nungwi sits at the northern end of the island. It has a large selection of hotels, restaurants, bars, boat trips and evening entertainment.

The area works well for travellers who want plenty happening around them. You can leave the resort for dinner, arrange excursions easily and enjoy a livelier beach atmosphere.

The tradeoff is that Nungwi can feel busy. If your idea of Zanzibar involves long periods of silence and an almost empty beach, central Nungwi may not be the right match.

Choose Kendwa if swimming is the priority

Kendwa is one of the strongest choices for travellers who want to swim without planning the entire day around the tide.

Its northern location means the tidal change is generally less dramatic than it is along much of the east coast. The beach has a broad, classic resort feel, and the sea remains more accessible through the day.

Kendwa can feel calmer than central Nungwi while still providing access to northern restaurants and activities.

Choose Paje if you want movement and social energy

Paje is known for kitesurfing, beach cafés and a younger, more social atmosphere. The steady activity on and around the water gives the area its character.

It is a strong choice if you want to meet people, learn to kitesurf or move between cafés rather than remain inside one resort.

The tides are impossible to ignore. At low tide, the ocean can retreat far across the reef. Some travellers find the changing landscape beautiful. Others are disappointed that they cannot step directly into deep water whenever they want.

Choose Jambiani for a slower east coast experience

Jambiani stretches south of Paje and generally feels quieter and more connected to village life.

It suits travellers who want long walks, small restaurants and a relaxed pace. The same east coast tides apply, so it is better for people who appreciate the changing shoreline than those who expect constant swimming.

Choose Matemwe for space and quiet

Matemwe and the northeastern coast appeal to travellers who want a quieter resort rhythm and access to marine excursions around Mnemba.

The setting can feel more secluded than Nungwi or Paje. Tides still affect swimming, and the experience varies between individual properties, so check the exact beach rather than relying only on the name of the area.

Do not use Stone Town as your main beach stay

Stone Town is where you go for history, markets, carved doors, rooftop meals and Zanzibar’s Swahili character.

It is worth spending one or two nights there, but it is not a substitute for a proper beach stay. Combining Stone Town with another coast usually creates a more complete Zanzibar experience.

Ask these questions before looking at hotels

1. Do you want to swim at any time of day?
2. Would you prefer nightlife, social energy or quiet?
3. Are kitesurfing, diving or boat excursions important?
4. Do you want independent restaurants outside the hotel?
5. How much driving will you accept for tours and airport transfers?

Once you know those answers, the right part of Zanzibar becomes much easier to identify.
