Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe Stream National Park is located in western Tanzania, along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, approximately 16 kilometers north of Kigoma City. Established in 1968, it is one of Tanzania’s smallest national parks, covering an area of about 35 square kilometers. The park’s terrain features steep valleys and a mix of grassland, woodland, and tropical rainforest, creating a diverse habitat for various wildlife species.

The park is renowned for being the site of Dr. Jane Goodall’s groundbreaking research on chimpanzees, which began in 1960. Her extensive studies of the Kasakela chimpanzee community provided significant insights into primate behavior, social structures, and communication. This research continues today through the Gombe Stream Research Center, making it the longest-running field study of an animal species in their natural habitat
