Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park covers approximately 2,850 km², making it Tanzania’s sixth largest national park.

Its diverse landscape spans open savannahs, rolling granite ridges, Acacia–Combretum woodlands, riverine gallery forests, and seasonal wetlands—habitats that during the dry season support a myriad of resident and migratory mammals (elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra) and over 550 bird species.

The Tarangire River bisects the park from north to south, serving as the only permanent water source and concentrating wildlife—particularly elephants (often herds of 200–300), buffalo and antelope—along its banks between June and October.

Tarangire is also famed for its ancient baobab trees (Adansonia digitata), some over 1,000 years old, which punctuate the landscape and provide critical water storage and habitat for birds and insects.

Compared to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, Tarangire sees fewer visitors, offering a more intimate safari experience, and forms a crucial segment of the northern safari circuit, linking Lake Manyara to the Serengeti
