Katavi National Park

Katavi National Park

Katavi National Park is located in the southwestern region of Tanzania. It forms part of the western tourist circuit, which also includes Mahale Mountains and Gombe Stream National Parks. In terms of size, Katavi is the third largest park in Tanzania covering some 4,471 square kilometres.

The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity and large concentrations of wildlife. During the dry season (June to October), the Katuma River becomes a vital water source, attracting vast herds of elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and various antelope species. Predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and wild dogs are commonly observed near these water sources, taking advantage of the congregated prey.

Katavi is also notable for its high densities of hippos and Nile crocodiles, particularly along the Katuma River and in the seasonal lakes Katavi and Chada. These areas provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, especially during the dry season when animals gather in large numbers around the remaining water bodies.
