In the shadow of Mt. Kenya's majestic slopes lies Naro Moru River Lodge. It is situated on the equator between Nyeri and Nanyuki at an altitude of 1,982 m (6,505 ft), two-hour drive from Nairobi and normally used as the base for climbing Mt Kenya.

The various mountain programmes include expert guides and porters, and include transport. Our safaris to Mt. Kenya cover several possibilities. We cater to the needs of a range of visitors.

The following items could be useful to anyone who takes up the adventure. Water bottle, rain parka, light wool sweater, and day pack for camera and other gear.

5 Day - Mt. Kenya Sirimon Trek

The Sirimon Track, one of the finest approaches to the peak area. The Sirimon Track offers some of the best views of the main peaks, with a gradual climb which can be done leisurely. We traverse the mountain by ascending the Sirimon Track and descending the Naro Moru Track.

Day 1:
Morning spent sorting and organizing personal equipment for the mountain trek. Lunch at the lodge (this is an extra charge for those not on full board the previous night). In the afternoon we are driven to the Sirimon Gate and then to road head at 11000 ft. An easy walk in the afternoon to help acclimatization. Overnight at Judmaier Camp (11,000 ft.) in high altitude mountain tents.

Day 2:
Ascend the Sirimon Track to Liki North Valley and camp overnight in this beautiful little valley below the subsidiary peaks of Tereri and Sendeyo, two ancient parasitic vents of the main peaks (13,000 ft.)

Day 3:
Climb out of the North Valley and into the MacKinder Valley, one of the broadest valleys on the mountain, with many giant groundsels. Camp at the head of the MacKinder Valley, just below the main peaks of Batian and Nelion, (14,000 ft.)

Day 4:
Alpine ascent of the third highest peak, Pt. Lenana (16,355 ft.) On route up the north face little used by tourists. Four hours of stiff walking to the summit. Then descend to Teleki Valley on the opposite side of the main peaks, to MacKinders Camp for a good night's rest (13,900 ft.)

Day 5:
Descend to the Met. Station (road-head) on the Naro Moru Track and then back to the lodge.

7 Day - Mount Kenya Timau Trek

The Timau Track, the main access route on the north side of the mountain lies in a major rain shadow. Because of this there is a very little forest on this side of the mountain. However since you are inside a low rainfall zone it generally makes for a drier safari and a more pleasant trek.

The slope is gentle and because the peaks on Mt. Kenya line up east to west the views from the north give you the impression you are trekking into a whole mountain range.

Day 1:
Morning spent organizing and sorting equipment for your trek to Pt. Lenana (16,355 ft.), the third highest peak of Mt. Kenya. Lunch at the lodge (this is an extra charge for those not on full board the previous night). In the afternoon, you will be transported to the Timau road head where you will begin your trek up Mt. Kenya from the north. (Overnight in high altitude mountains tents - Timau roadhead).

Day 2:
Hiking across beautiful northern moorland of Mt. Kenya with its unique flora and possibly seeing some of the wildlife which wanders up those northern slopes - zebra, eland, etc. Camp near the Western Marania River.

Day 3:

Continue your trek over rolling moorland country to camp at the headwaters of the Kathita East drainage.

Day 4:
Hike up to the spectacular Hall Tarns where the beautiful rock formation known as the Temple stands guard over Lake Michaelson 1000 vertical feet below.

Day 5:
Penetrate the defences of the Temple and descend to Lake Michaelson. Truly a trekker’s paradise.

Day 6:

An early start to ensure a successful summit bid for our main objective Pt. Lenance (16,355 ft.) Descend to MacKinders Camp on the Naro Moru Track.

Day 7:
Descend the mountain via the Naro Moru Route completing a fine circuit of Mt. Kenya, to the Naro Moru River Lodge for a well-earned rest.

7 Day - Mount Kenya Explorer
